Off-Fridays Mental Illness Blog Share, Week 6: Addiction

Share you writing about addiction here-#offfridays

Hello and welcome to Off-Fridays. If you’re new here, Off-Fridays is a blog share that converts to a link library and themed resource page once it closes for links. Anyone is welcome to join so long as your links are on-topic and not abusive. The rules page can further explain what Betty’s Battleground considers abusive (hint: controversial does not mean abusive). This week’s topic is addiction.

Addiction is a big scary word that not a lot of people think they know much about, even though many of us have experienced it in some form or another. If you want to test just how much you know about addiction, check out “Is/Is Not: Addiction,” a game I created this month to test people’s ideas about certain commonly misunderstood topics. Addiction is so widely demonized and misunderstood that I have begun to make it a personal mission to very publicly overshare the realities of my own addiction. Before I send you to the page where you can leave you links, I want to share a brief story.

I read an article the other day by a well-versed writer who had some heavy duty, prestigious credits like Al-Jazeera and CNN. The article was well-written–no complaints there. Engaging too. I even shared it around some. But at one point the writer described her ex-husband, who she had discovered using drugs. First, she found a tinfoil with burned, tarry traces zigzagging across it. Then, she noticed his pupils were the size of pins. Finally, she confirmed what she’d been suspecting: he was high on METH! Does anyone else see the problem here?

Off-Fridays Mental Illness Blog Share, Week 5: Depression + Suicide

Off-Fridays, THE Mental Illness Blog Share is BACK! Join Week 5 with your articles about depression and/or suicide-exclusively on

Happy Friday! Really, it’s an awesome ¬†Friday BECAUSE…it’s the first Friday of August! Which means…Off-Fridays, THE Mental Illness Blog Share is BACK. I’m so happy to bring my baby back. I missed my linky. I paused it for a month because I was placing too much of my own emotions and expectations on it. Too much of my creative drive was going into this blogger-built awareness project, and it was replacing social outreach. Which meant when people didn’t respond how I wanted and asked them to, I felt neglected and crappy.

So, I took the month off to battle depression and pursue happiness in other forms. And it paid off! I am soon to start as a contributing writer at Healthy Place’s PTSD blog, and I had a couple pitches picked up by and Tonic by Vice-the Tonic article, about my fear of happiness, was published this morning so check it out! I am marching forward with the freelancing, but I am also glad to bring Off-Fridays back, and I hope that you will join me in building some incredible mental health themed link-libraries.

This week’s theme is depression and suicide.

Off-Fridays Mental Illness Blog Share, Week 4: TRIGGERED

It's PTSD Awareness Month; Don't miss your chance to add your writing to a big PTSD resource library-on

Happy Friday! Not just any Friday, but OFF-FRIDAYS 4. June is PTSD Awareness Month so this week is themed to honor the experiences of trauma survivors and the people who know and love them. The title is “TRIGGERED” and the theme is PTSD, trauma, and triggers. If you’re a trauma blogger in any capacity, do not miss your chance to get your story into this link library. My blog’s mission is to end ALL mental illness stigma, but the main focus here is PTSD, so naturally, I want the Off-Fridays PTSD resource page to be biggest and best yet. It’s only as big as YOU make it, so please be sure to take a few moments this week to add your link and make this resource awesomely various!

If you want to see how the previous weeks’ libraries are looking, here they are:

Week 1: Mothers with Mental Illnesses
Week 2: Celebrations in Mental Health
Week 3: The Art of Recovery

Speaking of PTSD, trauma, and triggers, I have recently been dealing with a lot of triggers related to the abuse that caused my PTSD. If you follow this blog you know that for the past year I have been engaged in a custody battle with my abuser. Well, it is all coming to a head at the very end of PTSD Awareness week my abuser and I will be duking it out before a judge. By the time this linky closes for new submissions, my son’s fate will have been decided and our abuser will either be barred from our lives, or given an open door back in. Needless to say, I’m stressed. All I can do is ask for support, and right now, the way that request is manifesting is to ask that, if you write about trauma, to please include a link this week. That may sound odd to you, but Off-Fridays is my special project, and it really means a lot to me. I think all of us with mental health issues have those little oddities that don’t make sense to other people, but which totally make us feel better. Off-Fridays is mine. Getting your participation in this won’t help with my case or change it’s outcome, but it will brighten my outlook a bit and give a little boost my self-esteem…and right now, I can use all the positivevibeboostenergyselfesstemeverything I can get. Could you do me that favor, please, if it’s not too much trouble (which it’s not! It’s fun even, I swear!)?

Let’s work together to build Week 4: TRIGGERED
